Mercator Medical (Thailand) invests in cogeneration for energy self-sufficiency

Mercator Medical (Thailand), has entered into a contract for the supply and installation of a cogeneration plant at a production center located in Thailand. The investment, worth 459 million baht (THB), will be carried out by companies of the international engineering group Thermax of India and Thailand. The planned completion period is 19 months. As planned, the biomass cogeneration plant, together with the photovoltaic installations already in place, will provide the full electricity needs of the production facilities and office building of Mercator Medical (Thailand). The cogeneration plant will replace the boilers currently in use to generate process heat. The fuel will remain biomass, which is readily available in Asia and is promoted as an emissions-neutral energy source, as emissions released by burning wood can be offset by carbon dioxide absorbed by trees grown to replace those burned. As part of the investment in the CHP plant, it is planned to set up a system for constant monitoring of flue gas quality and to use electrostatic precipitators that significantly reduce the amount of dust produced by combustion compared to the filters currently in use. This will have a positive impact on the environment and air quality, and thus also on the living conditions of the local community.

At the same time, Mercator Medical (Thailand) expects to significantly reduce its existing carbon footprint. It is also worth pointing out that the ash produced after biomass combustion is collected by specialized companies and used, for example, in the production of cement mixes or fertilizers.
